JuniperBright reduces lipofuscin deposit and prevents new formation by dual mechanism of action: proteasome and autophagy.
What is lipofuscin?
Lipofuscin is a yellow-brown pigment that accumulates in cells as part of the normal aging process. It is thought to be a byproduct of oxidative metabolism. It’s often called the “age pigment” or “wear-and-tear pigment” and is a hallmark of aging. Simply put, lipofuscin is the obstacle to skin brightness and radiance and makes the skin dull and look ifeless.
Achieving Skin Clarity and Brightness
The more there is internal reflected light from the skin, the brighter and more attractive the skin appears. To achieve this, the formation of lipofuscin must be prevented and the lipofuscin deposits that have accumulated must be removed or reduced.
Dual Mechanisms to Reduce Lipofuscin: Two Cleaning Systems
1. Ubiquitin-Proteasome System:
The ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) is a cellular recycling plant that removes worn-out or unwanted proteins. It works by tagging these proteins with a small protein called ubiquitin, which signals them for destruction by a large protein complex called the proteasome. This process prevents lipofuscin formation.

2. Autophagy
Autophagy is a cellular process that clears cellular waste and damaged components. By removing damaged proteins and organelles like lipofuscin, autophagy contributes to keratinocyte differentiation including regulating pigmentation, maintaining skin barrier and overall skin health and function.
JuniperBright Efficacy Tests
In vitro tests showed 180% increase in proteasome activity in just 2 hours and 115% increase in autophagy activity in less than 8 hours with the addition of 1% Juniperright. Another test showed 60% reduction in lipofuscin accumulation with 0.5% JuniperBright.
In vivo tests showed 10% increase of internal reflected light by TransluDerm measurement with 1% JuniperBright. Since the efficacy is concentration-dependent, it is expected that a 50% increase in internal reflected light can be achieved at 5% concentration for a brighter, more radiant skin.
In vivo tests on the reduction of dark spots showed 15% decrease in the number of spots in 30 days with 1% JuniperBright.
