Cureberry

September 30, 2015 by rrperu Filed Under: Skin Leave a Comment

Cureberry is an extract of bilberry leaf from Ichimaru Pharcos, Japan.

bilberry

Background:

GABA (Gamma Amino Butyric Acid) exists in large amounts in the brain of mammals including humans. In the body, GABA is produced from Glutamic Acid by the action of Glutamic Acid Decarboxylase  or GAD. Ichimaru Pharcos reported for the first time that GAD67, a GABA synthesizing enzyme, exists in the dermal fibroblasts. These findings suggest that GABA is also being produced in the skin.

Furthermore, it was found that GABA enhanced fibroblast functions such as production of hyaluronic acid and biological anti-oxidant glutathione as well as cell growth. However, other studies of the company revealed that the amount of the enzyme GAD67 decreases as the skin ages. It is expected that the decrease in GABA production due to reduction of GAD67 is one of the causes of age-dependent decrease of stress resistance in the skin.

In the study, bilberry leaf extract has been found to increase GAD67 in dermal fibroblasts. Thus, Cureberry, an extract from the bilberry leaf, was developed. Cureberry is a functional cosmetic active ingredient that finds wide use in skin care applications.

Activity:
  • Promotes dermal fibroblast proliferation.
  • Promotes Hyaluronic Acid production.
  • Promotes Glutathione production.
  • SOD-like activity (antioxidant activity)
  • Inhibitory effect on collagenase activity (protects skin collagen)
  • Inhibitory effect on elastase activity (protects skin elastin)
  • Inhibitory effect on histamine release (anti-inflammatory activity)
  • Inhibitory effect on B16 melanoma cell (skin whitening activity)
  • Inhibitory effect on lipase activity (antioxidant activity)

Refined Honey

September 28, 2015 by rrperu Filed Under: Hair, Skin Leave a Comment

Since ancient times, honey has been consumed for its nutritional and medicinal benefits. It was also widely used as a natural remedy for treating wounds because of its healing properties owing largely to its anti-bacterial activity. Just recently, I read a historical novel set in the Medieval times (yes, I read such books). For the first time, I learned about the use of honey in treating burns and fending off infection. Also, there was an article I read recently of the use of honey (combined with flour) in removing lipomas naturally and safely.

Honey is mostly composed of sugars, water, acids, proteins, amino acids, and minerals. Because of its complex composition, honey exhibits many interesting properties. These same properties are now being fully utilized in skin and hair care applications.

Honey is a natural moisturizer and softener. When applied to the skin, it imparts softness and smoothness with a refreshing feel. The same moisturizing and softening properties also find their use in hair conditioners, imparting silkiness to hair and in hair treatments as these help prevent hair fall and strengthen hair follicles.

As mentioned above, honey also possesses antimicrobial as well as wound-healing properties. In skin care applications, these promote the skin’s ability to rejuvenate and replenish damaged or depleted skin, leaving it feeling silky soft and supple. In hair care, this anti-bacterial property works to prevent scalp infections, promoting healthy hair growth.

Because of its high viscosity, honey is a great vehicle for facial and body scrubs. It is easily rinsed off with water without leaving a greasy feel. Honey should be a staple in spa products.

Applications:

  • Skin care: anti-aging, sun care, facial and body scrubs
  • Hair care: shampoos, conditioners, hair treatments, tonics, leave-on conditioners

Papain USP

September 26, 2015 by rrperu Filed Under: Skin Leave a Comment

In the mid-90s, papaya soap began to gain great popularity. Likas Papaya, a brand of papaya soap, became the byword in the papaya soap industry. Other brands then followed in its wake. But I hard through the grapevine that it was later found out that the “exfoliating effect” characterized by itchiness effected by Likas Papaya which the consumers raved about was not due to the efficacy of the papaya extract but due to an issue in the manufacturing process. (The consumers attributed the itchiness in using papaya soap as its effectiveness).

Since Actichem has been known to source out and provide only the purest and most potent active ingredients for cosmetics especially in skin whitening, I then researched more about the active ingredient in papaya soaps. I found out that all the existing local brands were all using papaya extract in liquid form which has a very minimal if not negligible (insignificant) amount of the active, an enzyme called papain. The recommended dose for the liquid papaya extract was around 5%, leaving almost nothing of the active enzyme going to the finished product. Even if the dosage were increased considerably, it may still not produce the desired effect. And of course, that would also increase the manufacturing cost making the finished product unaffordable or not competitive.

I thought then that there should be a pure form of the enzyme. After diligently researching and searching for a supplier, I got hold of Marcor Development Corp. which develops and manufactures USP-grade papain in powder form. How wonderful was that! From then on, Actichem has introduced and supplied papain USP. It is far more expensive than the liquid extract, but because of its high active content, the maximum dosage (only 1%) offsets the cost many times over, making papain USP far more economical than the liquid extract with an optimum efficacy.

Application in Dermatology

Recently, one of the innovations in Dermatology is the use of enzymes in promoting epidermal cell turnover [exfoliation]. Enzymes, such as papain, are now featured as an exfoliating ingredient. Papain causes exfoliation by digesting intercorneocyte bonds chemically. Being a biochemical exfoliant, its activity is not pH-dependent, in contrast to that of AHAs and BHAs. However, the amount of exfoliation produced by papain is related to its concentration and increases with time. Therefore, the challenge to formulators working with this enzyme is to halt degradation of the corneocytes at a proper time.

Papain is very effective in cleansing and rinse-off products such as soaps, facial wash, shower gels, and facial cleansers and scrubs, since it works instantly and exposure should only be allowed for a limited time. For such applications, dosage should not exceed 1.0%. When used in leave-on products such as creams and lotions, papain is very effective in treating the driest of skin. It softens hard and calloused skin by gobbling up dead skin cells and breaking down the thickened epidermal layer [outermost layer of skin].

Mr. Ando of Ichimaru Visits Manila

March 18, 2013 by rrperu Filed Under: News/Blog Leave a Comment

Mr. Yoshihiko Ando, CEO and President of Ichimaru Pharcos, visited the country for the first time in March this year. It was another blessing for sure as Actichem celebrates its 15th anniversary. It was great to welcome the leader of our number one and very first supplier. Mr. Ando visited some of Actichem’s clients, namely, Splash, Dermpharma, and Human Nature.

Mr. Felix Peru and Mr. Ando with Actichem staff; March 12, 2013.

I met Mr. Ando for the first time during one of the PCIA conferences in China many years ago. He is a very simple, unassuming man, with no air of superiority. He speaks quietly and listens intently, but one can discern the man’s dedication to his work and to the company which was handed down to him by his father. Ichimaru Pharcos is basically a family business that has grown in tremendous proportions throughout the years. To read more about them, visit their website here.

In early-1998, when Actichem was just starting, Ichimaru was the very first foreign supplier who trusted our then small and fledgling business. Usui, their representative to the Philippines, and I communicated feverishly via email, fax, and phone calls as I immersed myself into the thick of product developments with prospective clients.

Back in those early days, Actichem was a one-man business. When I went out to visit clients for a series of presentations, Usui would call my office. Naturally, there was no one to answer except the answering machine (these were the days before I hired a secretary :)). He would become impatient and wondered why there was nobody in the office.

But in the midst of the many challenges in those days, Ichimaru and Actichem had forged a strong partnership that had remained solid through the years. Their products remain our company’s top sellers.

The top 5 sellers as of 2012:

Clairblanche
Clairblanche II
BioAntiage
K2 Glycyrrhizinate
Clairju

Needless to say, I always had a high regard for Japanese cosmetic raw materials and I never failed to emphasize this fact in my product presentations. In Ichimaru, extensive research is put into every active ingredient before it is launched. Their stringent manufacturing standards insure the production of safe, high-quality products. Another great thing is, Ichimaru continues to research and develop novel cosmetic ingredients that are multifunctional. Every year, they have a new offering, enabling clients to stay at the cutting edge of product development and latest global trends.

In closing, as was mentioned above, Actichem is celebrating its 15th anniversary and we have some specials in store for you, so watch out for those. Come visit here often.

A blessed week to all!
