A combination of the polyphenolic tannin, 3,4,5-tri-O-galloy|quinic acid, and a disaccharide (Trehalose) is responsible for activating rapid hydration and protection of the skin against desiccation.
3,4,5-tri-O-galloylquinic acid protects the skin first by bonding with the lipid layer and reducing desiccation and secondly by protecting the epidermal membrane against free radical damage.
Trehalose is widely used in cosmetics for instant hydration but occurs naturally in the Myrothamnus plant.
This unique sugar forms a gel as the tissue dries and this stabilizes and holds the cells in position. During rehydration the gel absorbs water and nourishes the cells once more.
